Restorative Fillings

Restorative Fillings

Restorative Fillings may be required in dentistry for many reasons, this is a common and simple technique used to repair teeth and is performed under rubber dam isolation.  The aim of a filling is to restore the form and function of a tooth as closely as possible to a natural tooth. Filling materials are most commonly made of Composite Resin (CR) or Glass Ionomer Cement (GIC), and will be matched to your individual tooth.

Some of the most common reasons for requiring a filling include tooth decay, broken, chipped or cracked teeth, discolouration, misaligned teeth and gaps in teeth. As these fillings can be matched perfectly to your tooth colour, they are commonly used for Composite Veneers on front teeth to improve overall aesthetics.

FAQ’s

What is a composite resin filling?

Composite resin fillings are made of acrylic resin that is reinforced with powered glass quartz, silica or other ceramic particles.

Are Composite Resin Fillings safe?

Yes, composite resin fillings are a safe option for restoring damaged teeth.  These filling materials have been used since the 1960’s, and are constantly being researched and studied to improve their composition.  Admire Dentistry uses a variety of composite resin material including; Dentsply Sirona Ceram.x Spectra ST, GC Essentia, VOCO Admira Fusion.

Our Frequently Asked Questions

Are tooth restoration and cavity filling the same thing?

Not exactly. While both involve repairing teeth, a cavity filling specifically addresses decayed areas by removing the decay and filling the hole. Tooth restoration, on the other hand, is a broader term that includes fillings but also encompasses other procedures like crowns, bridges, and veneers to restore tooth structure or aesthetics.

How long does tooth restoration last?

Literature says that composite restorative fillings last 5-7 years, while crowns and bridges typically last 7-10 years. However, poor oral health habits can cause failure much earlier. Alternatively, excellent oral health habits have seen these procedures outlast the recommended times by years.

How painful are tooth restoration/fillings?

It is very unlikely that tooth filling will be painful since it’s not touching the nerves directly. To achieve anaesthesia and ensure the treatment is pain-free, Admire Dentistry uses The Wand. A computer-controlled local anaesthetic device. It is unassuming and does not look like a conventional needle. The Wand controls the speed and amount of anaesthetic that is delivered to each patient to reduce pain and ensure optimal numbing of the area.

When should I replace old fillings?

If the filling is cracked, old and discoloured, or some of it has chipped away, it is a sign to replace the old filling. Other than that, if your tooth hurts or is sensitive, it could also be a sign to replace the old filling. At Admire Dentistry, we take intraoral photos of all your teeth so that you can clearly see and understand what we are assessing. We give you the knowledge so that you can make the best treatment decision for your mouth.
