Implants

Implants

A dental implant is a surgical dental procedure performed to replace a missing tooth. Unlike removable dentures, implants are permanently placed into your jawbone and then restored with a crown to replicate a natural tooth. Dental implants can also be used to hold dentures in place (implant-retained denture) or support a bridge (implant-retained bridge). In fact, implants can in certain circumstances be used to replace all your teeth.

The primary aim of dental implants are to replace the function of natural teeth.
Additionally, they can:

  • Prevent bone loss in the jaw
  • Prevent changes to a person’s facial profile (Reducing the formation of hollowed or collapsed cheeks after tooth extraction)
  • Help provide stabilisation for greater bite pressures with dentures.

Implant Procedure
Prior to any implant procedure a consultation is required to discuss the treatment stages involved. In most cases the implant process involves three separate treatment stages.

 1. Insertion of the implant into the bone
 2. Insertion of the abutment (connector) on the implant
 3. Attachment of the crown to the abutment

A dental implant is usually chosen for its longevity however this can be compromised with poor oral hygiene or smoking habits. Not regularly brushing and flossing can lead to plaque and calculus accumulation on the implant. This can result in bleeding gums, bone loss, infection, and pain. All these dental problems can jeopardise the health of an implant. Good oral hygiene is vital to ensure that the dental implant is maintained and that it can last for many years to come.

Our clinicians at Admire Dentistry aim to ensure your implant procedure and restoration is a pleasant experience. Feel free to contact us to book in for a consult to discuss your implant needs.

Bone Grafting

After a tooth is removed the surrounding, native bone will often resorb or dissolve. In certain circumstances the use of a bone graft material can be indicated to either reduce or prevent the loss of bone after a tooth extraction (socket grafting). Bone grafting can also on occasion, be necessary to contour the ridge around a dental implant to improve the bone foundation in which the implant is placed; this procedure can often be done at the time of implant placement (contour grafting).

There are a number of options when considering bone grafts, our clinicians at Admire Dentistry will ensure you are aware of all your options should this procedure be indicated for you.

Our Frequently Asked Questions

Does the implant tooth stay forever?

The implant itself will last a lifetime if looked after correctly, but the crown or tooth that is attached to the implant may need to be periodically changed; talk to Dr Mick Curtis at Admire Dentistry for more information

Is an implant procedure safe?

Implant surgery is a safe procedure. Admire Dentistry aims to ensure your implant procedure and restoration are a pleasant experience.

Are there different types of dental implants available?

Yes, there are lots of different types of implants and implant brands for different indications. Rest assured, at Admire Dentistry, only the best implants and original parts are used.

Does implant suit everyone?

While dental implants are a fantastic solution for many, it’s important to understand that individual circumstances can influence their suitability. Having good bone density and healthy gums usually makes the process smoother. Even if there’s a challenge, advancements in dental technology often offer solutions, like bone grafts. Health conditions or lifestyle choices, such as smoking, may require special attention. Growing children might need to wait, but for many adults, implants can be a life-changing choice. Talk to our dentist, Dr Mick Curtis, to see whether a dental implant suits you.

What if I don’t get a dental implant?

We understand that implants sometimes can be costly. To reduce your financial burden, you can have dentures or bridges as alternatives. On some occasions, your dentist may recommend a bone graft in order to preserve your bone volume for a future implant should you decide not to proceed with an implant initially. Otherwise, we also offer payment plans like the National Dental Plan (NDP). Talk to our friendly staff at Admire Dentistry to find out more information.
